In 2022, a plan for the development of popular science tourism will be developed

Following a joint meeting of the State Council and the Presidential Council for Science and Education, on February 10, 2022, the head of state approved a list of instructions, according to which the government was instructed to work out a plan for the development of popular science tourism.

In particular, it was instructed, with the participation of executive authorities of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation, in whose territories where significant objects of research and educational infrastructure are located, to develop and implement, within the framework of the national project "Tourism and the hospitality industry", an action plan ("road map") for the development of scientific and popular tourism in the Russian Federation, identifying sources of funding for such events starting in 2022 and considering the possibility of reimbursing part of the costs of citizens for the purchase of tourism products.

Director of the Russian Convention Bureau Sagid Zaremukov commented: “Most of the international rotating events are scientific congresses and conferences. International scientific communities make it possible to share experience, promote the development of communications between world “scientific luminaries” and young scientists, provide an opportunity to evaluate local specialists, demonstrate their achievements in a particular scientific field, and integrate them into the international community.

Such business events are one of the factors in the development of the tourism market segment, namely business tourism (the event participants are business tourists). In the light of the latest instructions aimed at developing the country's scientific potential, we see huge opportunities in terms of including international scientific events in the popular science tourism roadmap, which will help promote Russian science at the international level and stimulate business and popular science tourism. The Russian Convention Bureau is working closely with scientific associations and its partners to attract science-oriented events to the country, and is ready to contribute to the formation of an action plan and the implementation of the instructions of the country's leadership.”

“Hosting international scientific events increases the prestige of the city and country hosting the event. Leading Russian scientists become ambassadors of their country, and the largest universities and scientific institutions become venues for the practical part of conferences, - comments Irina Alexandrova, Head of the Department for Work with Associations and Corporate Customers. - With the assistance of the RCB, our country will host such events as IPHS, International Planning History Conference (Conference of Urban Environment Historians), FEBS, The Federation of European Biochemical Societies Congress (International Congress of the European Biochemical Society). Applications for several more scientific conferences are pending.”
