There are 83 lakes in the Yaroslavl region, 2 of which are large: Nero lake in the Rostov Region and Pleshcheevo lake in the Pereslavl Region The Rybinsk and Uglich reservoirs are located on the largest Volga river, with a length of 340 km in the territory of the region .The Rybinsk reservoir, with an area of ​​4,500 sq. km, is the largest artificial reservoir in all of Central Russia, it is a source of drinking water, a place for recreation and sports, fishing and fisheries and for the population of the central regions of Russia and Moscow.

The region is located within the forest zone. Its northern part belongs to the western region of taiga-coniferous forests, and the southern one - to the north-western region of coniferous and broad-leaved forests. The wild flora of the region has about 1130 plant species, of which 252 species are rare, 63 species require enhanced protection, 9 species are listed in the Red Book of Russia.

20 reserves of local importance have been formed, where certain species are protected: squirrel, white hare, elk, wild boar, capercaillie, black grouse, hazel grouse and other animals.
