The Sverdlovsk region is one of the most science-intensive Russian regions. More than 21 thousand people are engaged in R&D here. Over the past three years, the share of innovatively active organizations in the region has increased from 8.5% to 9.6%, and goods, work and services - from 7.3% to 10.3%.
Over the past five years, scientific organizations of the Sverdlovsk region have published 7.15 thousand articles in journals peer-reviewed by the international Scopus database. 60% of them relate to issues of physics, astronomy and materials science. The top 5 most popular areas also include chemistry, engineering and computer science.
The Sverdlovsk Region has the leading scientific and human potential in Russia. The region has two major scientific organizations of the Urals: the Ural Federal University (Ural Federal University) and the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences).
In the area there are:
- 24 scientific institutions subordinate to the Ural Territorial Administration of the Federal Agency for Scientific Organizations (FASO);
- 22 Institute of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences;
- 110 research institutes;
- 29 universities, in which more than 120 thousand students study (37% of all students in the Urals Federal District);
- More than 40 colleges and technical schools that train specialists in the most popular areas.

The largest university in the region is the Ural Federal University, formed on the basis of the merger in 2011 of the Ural State University and the Ural State Technical University. The University is a participant in Project 5-100 (Project to increase the competitiveness of leading Russian universities among the world's leading research and educational centers). Since September 1, 2017, the Ural Federal University has the right to independently award academic degrees.
