Congress and exhibition activity is the most important universal instrument of trade and economic policy of the region, designed to promote the goods and services in domestic and foreign markets, strengthen the economic potential, improve the investment climate and strengthen the position of St. Petersburg in the global economy.
St. Petersburg in the ranking of leading congress cities according to the ICCA version of 2018 is on the 154th place of the world and the 80th place of the European rating of ICCA in the number of held events, taking 2nd place in Russia in these indicators and giving way to such European capitals, like Paris, Vienna, Barcelona, Berlin and London. In these cities, 150-180 congress events of major international associations are held annually.
St. Petersburg ranks second in Russia in terms of the exhibition and congress market.

Experience in major events
In 2017, the 137th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union was held in St. Petersburg. For the first time, Russia received the delegates of this authoritative and influential international parliamentary organization, uniting parliamentarians of 176 states and 12 inter-parliamentary structures. The record number of participants in the history of the Inter-Parliamentary Union arrived at the assembly in St. Petersburg: 2400 representatives from 160 countries. In May 2018, the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum traditionally took place, which also brought together a record number of participants - more than 17,000 business representatives, heads of international organizations, officials and experts from more than 143 countries. 593 investment agreements, memorandums and agreements of intent were signed in the total amount of 2.625 trillion rubles. Event industry experts note the attractiveness of the city not only for organizers, but also for participants in business events. In 2017, St. Petersburg was recognized as the best business tourism destination according to the BuyingBusinessTravelAwardsRussia & CIS award.
In 2018, St. Petersburg, along with 10 other cities of Russia, hosted the matches of the World Cup. The competition, which took place from June 14 to July 15, was attended by 32 teams of FIFA member countries. The championship, during which more than 17 thousand volunteers worked, gathered 1.83 million fans, including 843 thousand from abroad.
From October 31 to November 3, 2018, the Northern capital of Russia also hosted a significant international event - the 85th International Congress of the World Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI), which attracted more than 500 delegates from 54 countries. Over 4 days, guests of the Congress - leading experts in the congress and exhibition industry, representatives of business and government authorities became participants in more than 15 thematic sessions.

Ambassadors of St. Petersburg: leading representatives of professional communities with influence in their industry, the opportunity to attract international events to St. Petersburg, as well as the desire to demonstrate the culture, heritage, scientific innovations and investment potential of St. Petersburg.
St. Petersburg Ambassadors Program: a set of tools and services aimed at assisting ambassadors in attracting international events to St. Petersburg, including organizing the participation of an ambassador in international business events with the aim of presenting the potential of St. Petersburg.
Regulatory framework: the program is included in the priority project of St. Petersburg “Development of congress and exhibition activities in St. Petersburg” and is part of the regional component of the national project “Export of Services”.
Purpose: to increase the rating of St. Petersburg as a business and event destination on the world stage.
Participants: executive bodies of State authority, members of international associations, representatives of industry structures, professional congress organizers.
Information on the implementation progress: a working group was created in conjunction with the executive bodies of State authority, leading scientific institutions of St. Petersburg and industry associations. A pool of potential ambassadors has been formed, a list of international events that can be potentially attracted to St. Petersburg in 2019-2024 has been prepared, a number of presentations and seminars have been organized with the participation of international and Russian industry experts.
The implementation of the program will increase the number of international business and public events held in St. Petersburg, and will also have a positive impact on the development of the cultural, scientific and event potential of the city.

St. Petersburg is the center of the origin of Russian higher education.
